The Development and Sustainability Agenda of Åland incudes seven strategic development goals, out of which goal number six (”A considerable increase in renewable energy and higher energy efficiency”) covers the energy sector. Listed under the main goal there are a set of energy-related subgoals. The progress towards some of these subgoals are presented on this page.
The energy system on the Åland Islands is tracked using Flexens’ visualization tool Energy Portal.
Real-time electricity consumption on Åland
This interactive graph illustrates from which energy sources the consumed electricity on Åland is produced. The time limitations can be altered and the energy source alternatives below the graph can be turned on or off. The graph is updated daily via Flexens Energy Portal.
¹ The solar energy is estimated based on historical irradiation data, which leads to unrealistic results on a small scale. On the scale of one year, however, the estimation is trustworthy. This method is also used by e.g., Fingrid. The aim is to be able to use real-time solar irradiation data in the future.
Yearly progress towards subgoal 1
Subgoal 1 is to decrease the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the energy sector on Åland by 60 % between the years 2005 and 2030. The emissions come from various sources; however; shipping, road transport, imported electricity and heat are dominating in terms of GHG emissions on Åland.
In the above graph the total GHG emissions from 2005 onwards are presented in tons of CO2 equivalents, as well as in tons of CO2 equivalents per annual energy consumption on the Åland Islands. This enables the visualization of whether the GHG emissions have increased/decreased due to new energy production methods or due to increased/decreased consumption rates.
Yearly progress towards subgoal 3
Subgoal 3 is to increase the renewable energy share for the energy mix on Åland to at least 60 % by 2030. The energy is mainly used for heating, electricity and transport. The renewable electricity has to be locally produced to be included in this progress.
Flexens Energy Portal realizes the tracking of energy sources used to satisfy consumption. Today, bio energy is the largest renewable energy source on Åland, while wind energy is the largest source of locally produced renewable electricity.
The above graph illustrates the annual energy consumption on Åland, as well as the renewable energy share. ”Other energy” refers to all non-renewable energy production.
Yearly progress towards subgoal 5
Subgoal 5 is to increase the locally produced renewable electricity share on Åland, so that it covers the electricity demand by 2030.
The above graph illustrates the progress od the locally produced renewable electricity share in the energy mix on Åland.
”Other electricity” means non-renewable electricity produced on Åland as well as imported electricity from Sweden or Finland.
